Kidney Dialysis

Why and When it’s Needed

Kidney DialysisKidney dialysis is a treatment option for those who are suffering from chronic kidney disease or failure. The use of this treatment is highly effective for many patients.

The process of dialysis helps to do some of the work healthy kidneys do in patients whose kidneys are not functioning normally. This treatment option is necessary when you develop end stage kidney failure. At this point, the individual has lost about 85 to 90 percent of their kidney function.

Dialysis works in several ways. If your doctor has told you that you need this treatment option, it’s likely because your kidneys aren’t working to remove the waste products from the blood stream.
This procedure works to keep the body balanced. It will:

  • Help remove waste products from the blood, which are generated through the everyday functions of your organs and cells.
  • It removes excessive salt from the body
  • It removes excess water from the body to keep it from building up to unhealthy and dangerous levels.
  • Dialysis works to ensure certain chemicals in the blood stream remain at normal, not excessive levels, including bicarbonate, potassium and sodium.
  • It also helps to control blood pressure.

Although kidney dialysis is a necessary function, it isn’t always a permanent solution. Some people do see improvements in kidney function after treatment.

For others, the need for dialysis is limited to just until the kidneys overcome an illness or infection. Others will need dialysis the rest of their life, unless they’re a candidate for a kidney transplant.

Hemodialysis And Peritoneal Dialysis
One of the two forms of dialysis is hemodialysis. It’s used to remove waste and chemicals from the blood using an artificial kidney. An access point is created through a minor surgical procedure and is where the blood will flow from the body into the artificial kidney.

The second option is peritoneal dialysis. Here, the blood is flushed in the body. A peritoneal cavity is filled with dialysate through a catheter. Blood remains in the arteries and veins that line the peritoneal cavity. Waste products are drawn out of the body into the dialysate.

Will This Cure My Condition?
Kidney dialysis is a process to keep the body functioning but doesn’t cure any underlying cause of your kidney disease or failure. It’s important to note the value of this procedure since it can help to extend your life significantly.
