If you have chronic kidney disease, you can often see improvements with your health by reducing high cholesterol numbers. There are many ways to do this, and in some cases, doctors may recommend medications to help the process.
However, some of the most effective ways of treating high cholesterol come directly from improving your lifestyle.A good place to start is with your diet.

The foods you eat are often the main cause of high cholesterol, especially if you consume a diet high in saturated fats.

The following foods can help to reduce these numbers.

  • Add more fiber to your diet by eating whole grain oatmeal.
  • Consume more fish and omega 3 fatty acids. Fish such as salmon, mackerel, lake trout, sardines, albacore tuna and herring are all rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which can reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels.
  • Eat some nuts, specifically almonds, walnuts, peanuts, hazelnuts and pine nuts. Each of these are excellent for reducing blood cholesterol levels.
  • Healthy oils, such as olive oil can also help to reduce bad cholesterol levels while also keeping good cholesterol levels healthy.
  • Look for foods such as orange juices, yogurts and margarines that have sterols or stanols added to them. This substance found in plants has been shown to be effective to reduce cholesterol.

If you do have kidney disease, getting help for cholesterol is key to getting healthy. However, just changing your diet isn’t enough. You also need to maintain a healthy body weight by getting enough physical activity on a daily basis.

What Not to Do
As you work to reduce cholesterol, avoid lifestyle choices that can worsen the problem. For example, stop smoking and reduce the amount of alcohol you take in. By avoiding a high fat diet, your cholesterol numbers will improve.
